One success story involves a father who met his daughter for the first time at the age of 15. This child was conceived while the parents were in high school and at the time the child’s mother did not want the father involved and encouraged him to go his separate way. The father was very young, uneducated and unprepared to raise a child and respected the mother’s wishes.
Later in life, this child became involved with the Department of Child Services due to the mother’s substance abuse issues. It was found that this child had a strong history of delinquent behavior and was placed in a youth home. As the DCS performed their assessment, the mother released the father’s name. The father submitted to a DNA test and the results confirmed that he was the father of the child.
We worked to engage the father and started off with therapeutic visits to develop the relationship between the father and child. Six months later, the father was granted full physical custody of the child and the child currently lives with her father, his wife and other daughter. Since the father became involved, this child has shown a significant improvement in her behavior evidenced by a clean record at school and improved grades. The addition of this child’s father into her life afforded her the opportunity to live in a safe, stable environment unlike the one she had previously experienced and become accustomed to. Hopefully, with this new opportunity, the girl will have the chance for the future that she deserves.
